MAMBAJAO, CAMIGUIN – San Nicolas De Tolentino Parish

MAMBAJAO, CAMIGUIN - San Nicolas De Tolentino Parish

Caminguin is among my favourite in the number of provinces I’ve visited so far around the Philippines. I like it for being remote and unique. Life there is serene and seemingly simple. With many natural wonders as tourist attractions to boot. An interesting note about Camiguin is that it is in Mindanao and yet the people there are widely Catholic. Hence some parishes are present in the island province.

In the capital town of Mambajao you will find the San Nicolas De Tolentino Parish.  It is a large church for a somewhat quiet town.  Unlike most of the beautiful churches I’ve seen, this one is not about ornate religious art, classic architecture nor history and heritage.  I think the simplicity of it is actually the essence of its beauty.

From the outside, the façade and structure stands proud and stern.   On the inside, a few details noticeably give it much character.  One is the stained glass windows at the front of the church.  It gives the church a dash of vibrancy and colour.  The other is the black and white checkered  tile flooring which I personally find very charming.

The San Nicolas De Tolentino parish was founded in 1916 and celebrates its feast on September 10th.  A visit to the province of Camiguin is not complete if don’t spend time to drop by this church.
